The Baker Institute Student Forum

The Baker Institute Student Forum (BISF) is dedicated to fostering student involvement in public policy. BISF is divided into 4 committees: Events, Research, Community, and Executive. The Events, Research, and Community Committees design and implement all BISF activities and events.

Events Committee

The Events Committee will plan, execute and publicize events of interest to Rice students and the Houston community.  The Events Committee will be responsible for events such as small talks with BIPP Fellows and Rice professors, large events with prestigious speakers and expert panels.  The Events Committee will:

  • Develop event ideas
  • Complete the event approval process
  • Invite the speaker(s) and coordinate their visit to Rice
  • Publicize the event to the Rice and Houston communities
  • Enjoy a great event!
Examples of past events have included the coffee talk with Dr. Neal Lane, the key-note address by John Podesta, and the panel discussion on the trafficking of women.

Research Committee

The goal of the Research Committee is to publish a student policy journal. This journal will be published by the Baker Institute for Public Policy. The Research Committee will:

  • Solicit articles from Rice students
  • Edit all submissions
  • Solicit reviews and advising from the BIPP Fellows and Rice Professors
  • See the smile on the faces of the readers of your journal!

Community Committee

The Community Committee will provide Rice students with a dynamic forum for policy discussion and debate.  The planning and approval process is identical to the Events Committee; however, the Community Committee focus will be on interactive, informal and fun activities.  The Community Committee will:

  • Plan frequent campus-wide policy discussions
  • Hold trivia nights
  • Show policy-related films
  • Organize off-campus excursions
  • And do anything else to get Rice students fired up about policy!
Examples of these activities have included the screening of Enron: the Smartest Guys in the Room, the World Trivia Night, and the trip to the Houston City Council.
