BISF and BIPP present: Trade Policy Challenges for the New Administration
BISF and BIPP present: Trade Policy Challenges for the New Administration - February 3rd, 2009
6:30pm - 7:30pm
ICF, Baker Hall
Although the new Obama Administration appears to place a low priority on international trade policy, important challenges abound. The world trading system is a perilous state, following a failure of the Doha Development talks last summer and a surge in protectionist sentiment accompanying the global downturn. Domestic pressures for protection are also on the rise, visible both in efforts to defend failing industries and to direct government purchases toward domestic suppliers. Meanwhile, trade has been the most significant engine driving U.S. economic growth over the last four quarters and appears to be no less important in the near future. Trade will also play a key role in shaping the Obama Administration's foreign policy. Several looming events will compel the Administration to make difficult decisions relatively quickly. Speaker Bio: Philip I. Levy studies international trade and development at the American Enterprise Institute. Before joining AEI, he was the senior economist for trade on the President's Council of Economic Advisers and a member of the Policy Planning Staff at the State Department. Previously, he spent 9 years on the faculty of the Yale University Department of Economics, including one year as Academic Director of the Yale Center for the Study of Globalization. Levy has experience in many international trade and development policy issues, including free trade agreements, trade with China, antidumping policy, welfare effects of globalization, and U.S. foreign assistance and international development policy. His writings have appeared in scholarly publications such as The American Economic Review, the Journal of International Economics, and Economic Journal. More accessible work has appeared in publications such as The Wall Street Journal and Forbes. NOTE: There will be refreshments in Baker Hall before the event at 6 PM
